ENGLAND
England probably doesn't get the credit that it deserves for being a fantastic golf destination. Have you ever heard anyone say "The one thing I hope to do before I die is to go to England to play golf"? I am certain that I have not. Scotland definitely, Ireland possibly, but never England. I guess it is because the home of golf is not in England it is in Scotland. It is not for lack of golf courses, since England has over three times as many as Scotland in less than twice the land area. Actually, over 40% of the courses in the British Isles are in England. It is also not for lack of quality courses as England has 4 of the current Open Championship venues in Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham and St. Annes and Royal St. Georges. England also has arguably 5 of the top 6 inland or non links golf courses in the British Isles in Woodhill Spa, Sunningdale (Old), Ganton, Wentworth (West) and Walton Heath (Old). Loch Lomond in Scotland is the only other inland course ranked in the Top 25 courses in the British Isles that is not a links course. All of these courses in England, with the exception of Royal St. Georges in the southeast, could easily be coupled with some great courses in Wales for a terrific golf vacation; or, if English courses, including 3 Open Championship venues on the Golf Coast were added, could be one of those trips of a lifetime. | |||
